What is a crown? Why is it needed?
Dental Crowns are teeth caps or coverings placed on damaged teeth. A crown is needed when there is a large cavity or fracture that threatens the health of a tooth. A crown may also be necessary when a root canal has been done.
The procedure involves removing the old filling or decay and trimming the tooth to the right shape for a crown. On the day of the procedure, a temporary crown is placed. The new crown is made in a lab and another appointment is scheduled to cement the new crown.
I was told I need a crown; can I just do a filling instead?
Unfortunately, no. When more than 50% of the natural tooth structure is missing, the tooth is not strong enough to support a filling. A crown completely covers the compromised tooth structure.
If I need a crown, do I need a root canal also?
No, not always. Sometimes a root canal is necessary. Let Dr. Erekson know if you are having pain with your temporary or new crown.
